To advise and scrutinize the government? Two types of political knowledge, political trust and unconventional participation

Abstract Well-functioning democracies depend on citizens’ ability to make accurate political judgments and express them in the public sphere. Thus, this research, we aim better understand role of knowledge trust shaping young Poles’ willingness engage unconventional participation such as signing a petition, boycotting specific products, taking part peaceful demonstration, or engaging social media activities. We distinguish between two types knowledge: about rules game current knowledge, which provide more insightful look into complex nature relationships trust, participation. In studies (Study 1, N = 570 Study 2; 1048) found that was positively predicted by game. also significant interaction effect suggesting those high may be willing participate only when being distrustful towards system. Implications limitations these findings are discussed.
